Abstract

I spent a week at Oakdale RV Park in Tomah, Wisconsin. I chose this park because it is in the vicinity of the Blackberry Hill Fossil Site, which is listed as a major lagerstätte of the Cambrian Period. Sadly I was unable to find a public entry point into that site.

I spent a week at Oakdale RV Park in Tomah, Wisconsin, a quiet place outside the bustle of the cities. I chose this park because it is in the vicinity of the Blackberry Hill Fossil Site, which is listed as a major lagerstätte of the Cambrian Period. Sadly I was unable to find a public entry point into that site. Apparently the fossils were found in commercial quarries, which reverted to their private, non-public business as soon as the paleontologists were finished. So I spent a quiet week working my blog, though from my accumulation of missed deadlines, it might not be obvious to you.

Oakdale KOA

I visited Oakdale KOA in early October. The fall color line was passing south over the area: the trees varied from a tired green to a brilliant golden to a sleepy brown.

The park provided the outdoor campground feel common to KOAs, rather than the ambiance of a resort. Since that is what I prefer (even if I spend most of my time indoors at the computer), I find that KOAs suit my fancy, despite the resort-loving critics, and this was no exception.

The park was spacious and uncluttered, with mature trees that provided a nice balance of sun and shade. The lanes were big enough to navigate easily, but the gravel site was barely wide and long enough for my truck and trailer.

There is not much in the way of activities to do or sights to see in the vicinity. This is a place for people who manage their own lives. Should I return to this part of Wisconsin, I would not hesitate to stay here again.
