I spent a month at Elkhart, Indiana, having repairs done to my trailer. Some of these repairs were covered by insurance or warranty, but my itinerary was in shambles and my pocketbook much emptier, when I left.

I had planned a couple of weeks for the work; it took over a month. Reservations had to be moved or cancelled. Many anticipated stays had to be shortened in order the overall itinerary in bounds. (I wanted to be in Florida in the winter, not the springtime.) And it kept me in the northern midwest well into December's chill, with consequences that will show in later editions of this blog.

I did not have to spend the entire month in Elkhart. I took Thanksgiving week off and drove the 600 miles back and forth to Leavenworth, Kansas, for dinner and visit with family. (No photos here on this public page. That's a family matter.)

Duncan RV Service has RV sites where customers can stay for free, while they're waiting for work to be done. That's a good thing that I took advantage of when I could. The bad thing is that their lot is only a quarter mile from one of the largest, busiest train switching yards in the country. The screeching and clacking and booming went on constantly, 24-7. There's an image below that I screen shot from Google Maps (I'm the blue dot north of the tracks). I counted about 100 parallel tracks in that yard, all of the, so my ears told me, full of locomotives moving back and forth, just for the sheer joy of making a racket.

Into each life, some rain must fall. Into each RV owner's life, some maintenance must be paid for. I paid an installment on my dues in Elkhart, Indiana. Stuff needed to be fixed. To accentuate the need, the electrical wiring that allowed me to control my leveling jacks shorted out the day I was to leave for Elkhart, and had to be jury rigged just to get me here.

I had tried to get things set up with Duncan a month in advance, but it seemed like we had to start over from scratch with insurance inspections and warranty inspections only after I arrived and before they would order any parts. Then they constantly complained about how I was interrupting their work schedule. Basically they have not adapted their work practices to 21st Century technologies, techniques, and expectations.

That said, once they had dotted the 'i's and crossed the 't's, they did good work. They have an expert staff that knows how to do the job right.
