Abstract

I spent a few days at Neosho, Missouri, to rekindle some very old memories of one of my parents' favorites places to visit.

I stopped at Neosho because of memories, old memories, from back in the late 40s when Mom and Dad would take us there. Before Jack and I came along, while they still lived in Pittsburg, Neosho was one of their favorite places to go. It became so again when they moved back to Pittsburg, and Joyce and Jay were leaving for their own lives. Then Dad bought a motor cycle, a big Moto Guzzi, and they spent many a happy day tooling around southwestern Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. It was on one of those trips that Dad suffered his first and fatal heart attack.

Anyway, by the time Jack and I arrived we were living in Wichita or Newton, and Neosho was a rare place to go on a few of those occasions we visited Grandmother and Daddy Jim in Pittsburg. My memories are few:

  1. I remember a tall cliff above a spring in the center of town, and a hotel at the top of that cliff. I’m told it burned down. Now the cliff is lined with huge houses.
  2. I remember a fish hatchery. It’s still there, its pools filled with 6-8” fish.
  3. I remember a stream lined with fishermen standing shoulder to shoulder.

Vague memories from a long time ago, but nostalgic nonetheless.

Neosho, Missouri

For me, Neosho is a fuzzy cluster of memories, none of them sharp. Yet as I walked around the town, especially down by the spring below the cliff, I had that feeling of familiarity, of deja vu, that accompanies perceptions of places long removed in time. That feeling of familiarity is a topic worthy of a tale or two, if I can get to it.d

Stage Stop Campground

This is a small, family-owned campground, whose owner is trying hard to make it an attractive value to campers. It is the only park I have visited with a storm shelter, a definite plus in tornado alley. (Don't let the words scare you. I lived in the Kansas portion of tornado alley for 35 years, and never saw a tornado. Though I did see the wreckage of several unlucky towns.)

The only mistake he has made in designing the park is to have the sewer connections too tall, which makes emptying tanks difficult. Otherwise, this is an enterprise worth support. I will stop again, if I return to the Neosho area.

Neosho National Fish Hatchery

The Neosho hatchery supplies fish that are used to stock ponds and lakes and streams all over the Midwest. I definitely had those deja vu memories there, but nothing I could pin a clear image to. I talked with one of the staff at the Visitor's Center, and she told me that they hold annual fishing derby's there. So that might be the source of my vague impression of fishermen lining a stream almost shoulder to shoulder, and of my parents trying to keep me out of the way of the flying lures.
