I spent a week near New Orleans, Louisiana, at the Natalbany Creek Campground, a few miles north in Amite. I took a day to wander around the Riverwalk and the French Quarter in New Orleans, then spent a quiet New Years Eve and Day at home in my trailer.

The weather during my stay was much colder than I'd hoped when planning my trip, gloomier and soggier too, for the most part. I watched my weather app, and picked the sunniest day for my trip to the city.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is definitely an exception to my generalization that one modern city is pretty much like another. The French Quarter has a style all its own, in architecture, music, and food (I had a spicy, pricy, but delightful lunch of crayfish, gumbo and red beans and rice, followed by a bourbon spiced pecan pie).

Around New Orleans

If I had anticipated being by myself in New Orleans in the week after Christmas, I was proved completely wrong.

Natalbany Creek Campground

Natalbany Creek is a roomy campground just east of Amite, which is about 50 miles north of New Orleans. I chose it, knowing that I would only want to spend a single day in New Orleans, and preferring to spend the rest of my time away from city noise and bustle.

The campground sits behind a casino, which has signs far more obstreperous than its own, so I managed to miss it (I'm getting quite skilled at that), and had to make a big loop on poor country roads to get back.

Once set up though, the campground was quite comfortable. The lanes were wide, and the sites (except for mine) were ample. They even provided fireworks on New Years Eve's Eve. (They expected really cold weather on New Years Eve itself. I brought in my hoses, put on my woolies, and weathered it just fine. Of course, in such weather I was burning through my propane rapidly, and it turned out that in order to refill my tanks, I had to drive 20 miles to a U-Haul dealer. The local vendor that Google finds is never open.)

All in all, the campground was ordinary but satisfactory. It was quieter than many parks I have visited over the past few months, away from busy highways and railroads. It was certainly more spacious than the "resorts" I was to encounter later in Florida, though my particular site was a little cramped.
