Abstract

I spent a week at Lazy Lakes RV Resort on Sugarloaf Key, Florida. It was not my first choice, but Thousand Trails prevented my going to their park, and Hurricane Irma utterly destroyed the KOA. Indeed, the damage and debris and flotsam from that storm is everywhere, including some devastated travel trailer parked by the side of the road. Clean up will take another year, at least. Lazy Lakes was satisfactory as a base from which to visit the keys, but as a resort it was way too much money for way too little.

Well, I’ve done it: I’ve reached the southern-most point of my Grand Fossil Tour. I’ve nowhere to go but up. Of course, if you look at them map, I’m still only a little more than half-way to the eastern-most point, even though I’m near the east coast of America. Newfoundland really sticks out there a long way. But I’ll get there.

I spent the week at Lazy Lakes RV Resort on Sugarloaf Key, Florida. It was not particularly attractive, but it was the best I could do with all the damage from Hurricane Irma last year.

Sugarloaf Key, Florida

The Florida Keys on a map remind me of dribbles off the beard of Uncle Sam that is Florida. Sugarloaf Key is toward the western end of those dribbles, about half an hour from Key West.

The Journey to Sugarloaf Key

The trip here was only three hours from south Miami. It was a lovely Friday with soft sun filtered by thin clouds. The traffic wasn’t a problem, though I’m sure quite a number of drivers behind me wished that Florida provided more places to pass geezers driving RVs at the speed limit. Outside the endless strip malls of Key Largo and Marathon and other cities along the way, US Route 1 is a narrow, island-hopping strip, with the Atlantic on the left and the Gulf of Mexico on the right. They’ve done a good job of rebuilding the bridge since Schwarzenegger had it blown up in True Lies.

The Florida Keys is basically a winter haven for the wealthy, and the wealthy wannabes, and the wealthy once upon a time, plus a few tourists like me who just want to see what it’s all about. Permanent residents are pretty much entrepreneurs and their employees engaged in shaking loose change from the impermanents. There are a lot of expensive houses for the winterizers, most of the new ones built on stout stilts, a lot of resorts and campgrounds for the temporaries, and a lot of small homes huddled away from the water for the mere employees.

Around Sugarloaf Key

Sugarloaf Key itself did not have much to recommend it. For one thing, it was hit much harder than Key West by Hurricane Irma. So my photos of the locale come from Key West.

Lazy Lakes RV Resort

I stayed at Lazy Lakes RV Park. It’s much smaller than the one I stayed in in Miami. Unlike that manicured resort, Lazy Lakes has the feel of a rough-and-tumble tropical island. The sites are wider, and I was able to back into mine ALL BY MYSELF, with only a little bit of wiggling. I’m learning! It helped that the site across the lane was empty, giving me place to get a better angle on my own.

It was not my first choice, but Thousand Trails prevented my going to their park, and Hurricane Irma utterly destroyed the KOA. Indeed, the damage and debris and flotsam from that storm is everywhere, including some devastated travel trailers parked by the side of the road. The campground was hit hard by Irma, and they're still finishing up their repairs there. (Didn't really need that final 'there' but it let use all of its homophones - correctly - in the same clause.) Clean up will take another year, at least.

Lazy Lakes was satisfactory as a base from which to visit the keys, but as a resort it was way too much money for way too little. Their website suggests a beachfront, which actually belongs to Key West several miles away. The area immediately surrounding the park is actually rather ugly.

Points of Interest

Oddly enough beaches are not all that common on the Keys, except for those connected to resorts, and mine did not have one. Watersports are readily available, and I decided to go kayaking.

Kayaking in the Mangroves

I took advantage of my stay on the Keys by going on a kayak tour through the mangrove marshes. This was with some trepidation, since balance is no longer something my body guarantees me. But I made it through without falling over, and kept my camera high and dry. The only hard part was getting out of the kayak at the end. Getting up from sitting on the floor is also no longer one of my skills.

Next Stop

From Sugarloaf Key I returned to Miami Everglades RV Resort before heading north to the Orlando area.

I posted one blog entry to cover both my stays at the Miami Everglades RV Resort; that's where you'll go if you click the PREV button in the footer. The NEXT button will take you to the entry for Orlando.
