Abstract

I spent two nights at Argentia Sunset Park, near Argentia, Newfoundland. The Argentia Sunset Campground, where I stayed, had one value in its favor: it is convenient to the ferry to Nova Scotia. Nothing else redeems it. It’s perched on a gravel quarry of a hill overlooking the Argentia Harbor. It provides only 20 amps of power to transient RVs (and I had to search all over for my little used 20 amp adapter), and that meant not only no A/C, but no microwave. I made do with my ceiling fan in the August heat. And of course no wifi capable of connecting to the internet.

Argentia is on the western coast of Newfoundland's Avalon peninsula. It is little more than some industrial surroundings to the port, which services transatlantic shipping as well as the ferry to Nova Scotia. And a busy port it is, at least in in the summer time, with a heavy tourist trade. Twixt September and June the much reduced ferry traffic is diverted to Port aux Basque.

The Journey to Argentia

Most of the route to Argentia I had traveled before, so there's nothing new to report. After settling in to the campground, I drove over to Placentia, a few kilometers to the east, but got stuck in a line of traffic waiting for a drawbridge that never did open. And not a single eating place worthy of stopping did I find west of the bridge.

Argentia Sunset Park

I spent two nights at Argentia Sunset Park, near Argentia, Newfoundland. The campground, where I stayed, had few values in its favor: it is convenient to the ferry to Nova Scotia, and there are distant views of the ocean. Nothing else redeems it. It’s perched on a gravel quarry of a hill overlooking the Argentia Harbor. It provides only 20 amps of power to transient RVs (and I had to search all over for my little used 20 amp adapter), and that meant not no microwaveA/C and no A/C. I had to make do with my ceiling fan in the August heat. And of course no wifi capable of connecting to the internet. Recommendation: If you're bringing an RV across on the ferry to Argentia, look elsewhere for a nearby campground.

Onward

My next stop after leaving Argentia was North Sydney, Nova Scotia, from which I will begin my return trip west by visiting the Cape Breton Fossil Centre.

The map below, if you view it between September and May, is inaccurate. I actually took the ferry from Argentia directly to North Sydney. However, that ferry runs only in the summer months. This, however, is a live Google Map, and in its wisdom, it shows only routes that are currently possible. Return to this page next summer, and you will see my actual route.
