Abstract

I spent a week at Quebec City KOA, near Quebec City, Quebec. Although I could find no fossil sites or museums, I did enjoy a tour of this ancient (for America), history-laden city.

I spent eight days in Quebec City, Quebec. As far as I could learn, there were no fossils to be found there, either on site or in a museum. Nonetheless, it was a large city with a proud history, and I needed an intermediate stop between Carleton-sur-Mer and Montreal.

Quebec City, Quebec

Quebec City is the capital of the province of Quebec. Located where the St. Lawrence River narrows from a miles wide estuary, it was established as a fort in 1535, making it one of the oldest cities in North America. I was able to communicate in English and and the tiny bits of French I have, far better than in Carleton-sur-Mer.

The Journey to Quebec City

The trip from Carleton-sur-Mer to Levis, across the St. Lawrence River from Quebec City, made for a long day, a 6-hour drive . The first part of the trip crossed the hump of the Gaspe Peninsula to get to the St. Lawrence Valley. That part, when I was fresh, was beautiful, mountain peaks and valleys, covered with dense mixed forest, and a broad river running along the highway.

When I reached the St. Lawrence, it was as though I had got back home to the midwest: grain fields ripening in the sun. There were too many trees around the fields for it to be Kansas; maybe southern Missouri.

Have you ever noticed how the St. Lawrence River strikes a straight line from Lake Ontario all the way to the Atlantic? It doesn't meander in broad loops like "normal" rivers, especially those that run through relatively flat terrain, such as the Missouri, the Mississippi, the Platte. Apparently, that region was a subduction zone about a billion years ago, with subcontinents crashing in against the Laurentia, creating this abnormally straight boundary, that is maintained by the St. Lawrence.WikipediaWikipedia Well, as goes the river, so goes the road alongside: straight as a string, no winding up and down or back and forth. And you know how hypnotic straight roads can be. The last couple hours were long!

Around Quebec City

History and tradition dominated the (recorded) tour I took around the city. Like the language of the people I met, the architecture has a decidedly French accent, with mansard roofs, often sheeted in tin or other metal, and with gray stone walls, a style maintained in newer architecture, seemingly only because that's what tourists expect. The old city is encircled by the Rampart, which they claim is the only remaining walled city in North America. This old defense is typical of the military emphasis of the tour's description of the city's history. From what I saw, however, the ordinary Québécois or tourist is far more interested in the wide variety of eating and drinking places than in a stagnated history.

Quebec City Has Elm Trees!

Quebec City KOA

This KOA differs from the typical, partly because it is bi-level. The entrance and office is located off a frontage road to the busy Autoroute 20, but most of the campground is down a steep bluff onto the margins of the St. Lawrence, which is a kilometer away. From there the attractive, well-wooded campground resembled a feather or fern branch, with a long central corridor, branching off into lanes from which the sites angle off. My own site was not quite big enough for my trailer and truck; I had to squeeze my truck into the space alongside the trailer.

The staff was friendly ahd helpful, and I was able to converse easily in English. The wifi was KOA technology, for which they provide device-unique passwords. For some reason, the password I assigned to my computer expired a couple of times, and had to be reset by the staff. When connected I got really good internet speed on my computer and phone, and no access at all on my tablet, which I'm beginning to think has gotten prematurely old.
