Abstract

I spent a week at Montreal South KOA, near Montreal, Quebec. I had intended to visit the Redpath Museum at McGill University, but although I drove to the area, I was unable to find parking in the hyper-urban setting.

Montreal, Quebec

Montreal is Quebec's largest city. In some superficial ways it is to the capital, Quebec City, as New York is to Boston. The latter cities are steeped in history, and that is what they present to the visitor. Montreal, like New York, is an economic powerhouse, constantly building edifaces and fortunes.

I an not an urbane person, so visiting a city for its own sake, much less for its nightlife, is not my thing. Had I found parking for the museum, I would have indulged in a tour, just to have a few photos to show. But I couldn't and therefore didn't.

The Journey to Montreal

I continued southwest along that nearly straight-as-a-taut-string Transcanada Highway that skirts the south bank of the St. Lawrence. Nice flat farming country, with fields of ripening beans and corn, with much thicker forest boundaries. About 30 km east of Montreal, some bumps in the terrain appeared. Too steep to be hills, not tall enough to be mountains. The eponymous Mount Royal, in the heart of Montreal, is similar, though higher (at 233 meters, or 764 feet, below the threshold of true mountainhood). According to Wikipedia, these bumps are of volcanic origin.

Montreal South KOA

Yet another KOA. I find I gravitate to them, since for the most part they are reliably satisfactory, and often quite attractive, though I notice that at least in the eastern states and provinces, they are not quite the value that they once were, as owners add features (that I do not use) to compete with the upscale resort campgrounds.

Montreal South KOA, at $34 a night, was a good value. A large, attractive, well-wooded park, reasonably spacious, although my particular site was a little too short. It had all the standard amenities, including a swimming pool. It was not set up to replenish propane bottles, which September is beginning to make demands on. It has installed KOA's wifi system, but it does not issue passwords. Not only is this not secure, but it is quite inconvenient, since a user has to reconnect every 30 minutes. Annoying!
