I intended to spend two nights at Granite City KOA, near Granite City, Illinois, just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, on my way west. Instead I waited on the weather. Every day I studied my weather app only to find a big thunderstorm hovering over the Kansas City area. I kept expecting it to move east towards me, but it didn't. It kept marching in a long line to the north-northeast, always keeping Kansas City and Leavenworth right at its heart. So every day I called to revise my reservations in Granite City and Leavenworth. After two extra days, it finally tired of teasing me and dissipated. Never did see the thunderstorms in St. Louis that my app had predicted.

The Journey to Granite City

I arrived in Granite City (northeast of St. Louis, east of the Mississippi) fairly early in the afternoon. The warm, muggy weather made for poor sleeping, and I had wokem up and got started early.

This stretch was a continuation of the previous, except that the road was bumpier and the traffic lighter. The tablelands grew flatter and flatter as I moved from Indiana to Illinois. The trees still held onto that tired green, with occasional yellow. I didn't notice a bright fall tree anywhere on the trip.

Granite City is a light industrial Illinois suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, with little to recommend it except as a convenient stop along I-70. I didn't have time this trip to explore St. Louis and its much older history.

Granite City KOA

The Granite City KOA (or as it is more formally called, the St. Louis N.E. / I-270 / Granite City KOA) is a rather pleasant, moderately wooded campground within itself. Outside its borders, however, is a neighborhood of light industry, primarily trucking, that does not appeal to the typical camper. The tourist will have to drive a ways to get into the more interesting St. Louis.

My next stop after leaving Granite City was Leavenworth, Kansas, where I spent a few days visiting with family.
