I spent few days at Covenant Cove RV Resort, near Leavenworth, Kansas, in order to visit family. My late brother and his wife and family have lived there for a lot of years, working as a civilian for the army (no, he was not in the penitentiary!), and I've visited frequently. For some reason I can never get my directions straight in that town.

The Journey to Leavenworth

I finally arrived in Leavenworth, after spending a couple extra days in Granite City, east of St. Louis, waiting for a heavy storm to move east. It never did. It dropped all its water in the Kansas City area and dissipated. So the drive across Missouri was sunny and dry. But the campground I arrived at was a soggy mess.

Covenant Cove RV Resort

I don't have good memories of Covenant Cove, but much of that was due to the saturation the region suffered while I was waiting in Illinois. The campground is old, the paved patios are broken, and the sites are mere packed earth. That is, they were until the storm. The sites are just packed dirt that turned to deep mud under the onslaught of six days of rain. It took extra effort, and 4-wheel drive, to back my trailer into the site. The ground was so saturated that when I tried to dump my tanks, the sewer overflowed. (Think Robin Williams' RV!)

But even if the weather had been nice, this campground would be dismal. That despite a friendly and helpful manager, a pretty lake in a section of Missouri, with its wrinkled farmland alongside the Missouri River, that I regard as one of the most scenic in the nation. The ridges that surrounded the campground were just beginning to put on their autumn coats. Nonetheless, Covenant Cove was not an attractive or fun place to camp.
