The Journey to Boise

Another day of bright blue skies over yellow hills. I was happy about the weather, but found that I was getting very weary driving every other day, in order to beat old man winter across the mountains.

The northeast corner of Utah was much like southern Wyoming, except that the cedars were more frequent, and the hills were taller and closer (not really tall enough for mountains; "mountlets"?)

After crossing into Idaho, I had to pass a couple of real mountains before turning west into the Snake River valley as it meanders down from the Yellowstone caldera. The valley is huge; horizons are maybe 50 miles on each side. The river waters Idaho's great southern farmland, with fields and trucks full of ... You guessed it!

I am sad to report that I can no longer show the routes I took to get from place to place. Google, in its infinite corporate wisdom, now charges a fee to embed such "advanced" features, a cost which a pro bono site like this cannot endure. From now on, I will only show you the location of where I stay (at least until Google gets even greedier, and puts a price on those too). Nonetheless, you can still view my route, at no cost to either of us (yet):

  1. Click on "View larger map" to open the map in Google Maps.
  2. Click on the "Directions" button.
  3. Replace "Your location" with "Stanfield, Oregon".
  4. Hit Return.

Of course this procedure doesn't show you which among alternative routes I took, or what side trips I ventured on, or what strange adventures my phone's GPS might have sent me down, but I will give you an approximation of my route.

Boise / Meridian KOA

This is a radically different kind of KOA: it's set right in downtown Meridian, an oasis in a sea of urban franchise stores, for people who like the camping lifestyle but without a hint of wilderness. Actually, they've done a good job of giving it a resort feel: Although it was mostly sunny, there were trees all around, most of them in the autumn fashions of red or gold. The campground is surrounded by a wall to hide the city bustle. Like other resort parks, they've packed the sites too tightly, but I've stayed at worse.

I chose this campground because it split my hurried drive back to Olympia into nice chunks. If I return to visit this part of Idaho for an extended period, I shall probably select one in a more rural setting.

My next stop after leaving Boise was Stanfield, Oregon, for a single night before returning to Olympia, Washington.
